Strolling Strings LLC is a local youth orchestra open to string players aged 6-18 that have at least one year of playing experience. Rehearsals are held at Clemmer Music Studio in Harleysville on Wednesday nights. There are no auditions required, but students are organized into one of two groups based on their age and musical ability. This information is acquired through the registration form.
The first group, "Prelude", is intended for young or beginning players. We perform music that ranges from Level 0.5-2 and we work on basic orchestral techniques as well as teach the oldest of the players how to lead their sections. This group rehearses from 6:30-7:30pm.
The second group, "Encore", is intended for older or advanced players. We perform music that ranges from Level 2.5 and higher, and we will work on more advanced orchestral techniques. This group rehearses from 7:30-8:30pm.
There are two semesters a year, a Fall and a Spring semester. Each semester is approximately 2 months long, and includes a family concert at Clemmer Music, an open rehearsal fundraiser at Chibi Cafe Co., and one or two performances at local retirement communities. In the past we have performed for the Peter Becker Community in Harleysville, and the Lutheran Community in Telford.
We look forward to our first one-week long Summer Camp this summer! July 28th-August 1st, 2025. Click Register for more information.Â
Our goals are to...
provide performance experience for young musicians
connect students from different schools, make new friends
teach students how to prepare a program and play "on tour"
allow students to take ownership of their own music and ensemble
share the love of music with the community
Strolling Strings was founded by Valerie Smith-Gonzalez, a Harleysville-resident and violinist. She is the conductor for both Strolling Strings orchestras. Valerie has taken great inspiration from her previous work with Got Strings Youth Orchestra, SU Strings, and her own high school's after-school orchestra. She takes great pride in sharing music with students, and teaching students to share their music with others. Valerie has been teaching privately since 2016 and currently works as an Orchestra Director at Perkiomen Valley School District. She received her Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Susquehanna University and is working on her Master's degree in Music Education at West Chester University.
Heather Knox joins Strolling Strings as the Social Media Manager. Her passion for music was homegrown, and spread across the numerous cities in the Southwest where she grew up. Her formative opportunities to perform in local music theaters, bands, and orchestras gave her the skills she needed to pursue a variety of degrees and careers in the Music industry. Heather received her B.M. in voice performance from Susquehanna University and her M.M in the same from SUNY Binghamton. Heather has worked in higher education since 2016, beginning as an admissions assistant for the music department at Susquehanna University. She taught classes in music pedagogy and vocal technique at SUNY Binghamton, in addition to her position as a department administrator. In addition to this position, she serves as the Employer Relations Coordinator for the University of Pennsylvania's Career Services office, where she helps to connect college students with their dream jobs. Outside of work, Heather is an active performer of both Jazz and Opera music, and she loves spending time taking care of her small houseplant collection and two cats.
Ricardo Smith-Gonzalez is the photographer for Strolling Strings. He is a Sellersville resident with an Associate's degree in film and cinema from Bucks County Community College. Ricardo shares a passion of music like his sister, Valerie, but in a different media. In high school, Ricardo would edit the trailers for the schools musicals and worked on minor projects in college. He currently is striving to travel and share his experiences through his photos.
